This volcanic mountain region does not experience true winter snows like the High Atlas making it perfect for winter hiking. The Saghro is situated between the High Atlas mountains and the Sahara desert and makes a nice link to also camel trek overnight and explore the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. You’ll completely traverse the Saghro Massif on foot, ending your last day on the remote Sahara side. High uplands and volcanic monoliths resemble the U.S. southwest with soaring mesas, sparse vegetated plateaus, hidden springs and canyon oasis where you can freely ramble.

Programme

Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech (19h30)

Welcome at Marrakech Airport and transfer to the hotel. Evening free. Night at the riad (local hotel).

Day 2: Marrakech – Ouarzazate – Tagdilt

Leaving Marrakech early in the morning, the coach goes towards the south of Morocco. On the way, we drive through the High Atlas to Tizi n’Tichka col (2260m.), then to Ouarzazate, the Roses and the Dades valleys At the end of the afternoon, we arrive in Tagdilt where we meet our caravan. Night in guest house.

Day 3: Tagdilt – Almou n’Ouareg

At the start of today’s walk, we cross an arid plateau before reaching a small and refreshing oasis with oleanders plantations. We then climb to Ifard col (2450 m) which offers splendid views over the Dades valley and the M’Goun range. The camp is set up further down on the small Almou n’Ouareg plateau. Walking time: 6 hours.

Day 4: Almou n’Ouareg – Igli

The trail climbs steadily to Tizi n’Ouareg col (2450 m). We walk then down towards a plateau, surrounded by magnificent cliffs and coloured rocks overlooking the small fields around the hamlet of Igli. Camping or night in a local home. Walking time: 6 hours

Day 5: Igli - Bab n'Ali

We continue our trek in the oasis of Igli in an extraordinary mineral setting. We then cross the Berber village of Afourar before arriving at the beautiful site Bab n'Ali with its rock towers that rise to more than 60 m. Bivouac. Walking time: 6 hours
